Tunable applications based on RF-MEMS technology
Many wireless systems (like smartphones) need to support many different bands under many different conditions. This requires tunable components in RF front-ends and antennas, like switches and variable capacitors or even tunable inductors. RF-MEMS technology delivers the best possible performance, which cannot be achieved with SOI or GaAs technology. This talk will show the use of tunable RF-MEMS capacitors to tune the aperture of antennas and why that is better than trying to tune just the impedance at the feed of the antenna. Also some examples of tunable matching networks, tunable filters and phase shifters will be shown. Gradually, the multi-band wireless front-ends are evolving from dedicated components for each band to a fully tunable solution. RF-MEMS can deliver the required performance.
