MEMS for reconfigurable RF and microwave circuits

Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) are continuously expanding their adoption across the electronics market space. Even mobile wireless systems, which require a very demanding combination of high performance, low cost and great reliability, have recently seen widespread adoption of RF-MEMS tuning components overcoming limitations of solid-state solutions. Depending on the component type and tuning application, different key RF parameters become critical and can be successfully addressed by RF-MEMS technology. At the same time, the tough requirements in terms of cost and reliability can be solved using the right integration and packaging. With the increasing level of complexity of RF front ends due to the many wireless standards that need to be simultaneously supported by the mobile terminals, the coming years will see RF-MEMS based tuners become a must-have solution in the industry.
