High frequency electronics: RF and photonics technology challenges
High frequency electronics has always been and will continue to be driven by technology innovation, whether it is for wireless radio frequencies (RF, mostly microwave frequencies) or ultra-high-speed line transmission (fibre-optical communication). In both domains frequencies and speeds are expected to move to values we couldn’t dream of even fifteen to twenty years ago, with Gb/s mobile data speeds in 5G and Tb/s/wavelength optical transmission. Researchers are as always promising the sky, if only we succeed to implement a few innovative technologies like massive MIMO microwave transceivers in mobile handsets and integrated coherent photonics ICs. This talk will review these developments and focus on the topic that is often conveniently ignored: the risks and challenges associated with promising new technologies and solutions. But also, to end with a positive note, the exciting RF developments that will continue to make it such a great technology domain.
