Crop monitoring with 5G in Groningen

A unique experiment is taking place in the north of Groningen. Top players from the telecom industry (Vodafone, KPN, Huawei, Ericsson) and renowned research institutes (TNO, RUG, Surf, Hanzehogeschool, Agentschap Telecom) collaborate together with the Economic Board Groningen to develop a living lab for 5G, the latest generation of mobile internet. The 5G lab offers opportunities for entrepreneurs around the region to test their own innovations in an environment with excellent facilities, both technical and financial. This rural field lab is the only one in its kind. Experience together how an innovative entrepreneur from northern Groningen wants to lead the agricultural drone industry by real-time crop monitoring. This talk will provide a preview of the wireless connectivity solution that makes this possible. It will be explained how a drone uploads enormous amounts of data to a powerful server via the internet while flying above the fields of Groningen, where the processed data provides meaningful information to the farmer.
