Challenges on 5G massive MIMO AFE integration and performance

Massive MIMO is one of the adopted technologies to provide higher system capacity and faster throughput in wireless cellular systems. In addition, new frequency bands have been approved to increase the available spectrum, which can be translated into more capacity as well. However, since the installation facilities of the mobile operators are already very crowded, there’s a strong limitation on the maximum size that these new massive MIMO base stations can have. This restriction is directly translated into more integration in the RF components that compose these base stations, which increases the complexity of the design and the performance requirements. This talk addresses several of the identified issues, with special attention to the RF power amplifier development and techniques to increase its compactness, while keeping the performance level to meet the specifications.
