5G antenna design for mobile phones

5G is upon us as currently a lot of 5G network initiatives are being introduced.  As part of the next phase, smartphones need to be 5G ready. What are the implications for 5G antenna design in a high-end smartphone? Key to realizing the potential of 5G is the inclusion of multiple antenna systems to exploit smart beamforming and for high data rate transmissions in the big bandwidth mm-wave frequency bands, and massive MIMO in the 1-7 GHz ‘mid-band’ frequency range. This talk will explore the design and simulation aspects related to both. Additionally, these new standards bring new regulations. In the mobile phone industry, human exposure is a key consideration for certification and there are some important differences in human exposure to electromagnetic fields in the 5G mm-wave frequency range.
